A 650+ in NEET is not a miracle score. It is an arithmetic one. When a student tells me they want a top government seat, I don't talk about luck — I open a notebook and we break 650 down into marks, subject by subject, until it stops looking scary and starts looking like a plan.
That is the first shift you need: stop treating NEET as one giant mountain, and start treating it as three manageable hills. Here is exactly how to climb each one.
What a 650+ actually looks like
NEET is 720 marks — Biology out of 360, Physics out of 180, Chemistry out of 180. A 650 does not require perfection anywhere. It requires you to be very strong where the marks are easy, and merely solid where they are hard. A realistic target sheet looks like this:

Notice where the battle is won. Biology alone can hand you nearly 340 marks. That is why the students who fear Physics and neglect Biology have it exactly backwards. Protect Biology first — it is the largest and most reliable bank of marks in the entire exam.
NCERT is not a reference book — it is the exam
If you remember one line from this article, remember this: for NEET, NCERT is the syllabus, the question bank, and the answer key all at once. Year after year, a large share of questions come directly, sometimes word for word, from NCERT lines — especially in Biology and Inorganic Chemistry.
Read NCERT Biology like a detective, not a tourist. Every line, every diagram, every table, every "did you know" box is potential question material. Most students read it three times and still miss the small print. The small print is where the marks live.
Biology — win the subject that wins NEET
Read NCERT line by line, then again, then again. Turn every diagram into a question you can answer without looking. Human Physiology, Genetics, Ecology and Plant/Cell Biology carry heavy weight — give them extra rounds. Then test yourself relentlessly with previous-year questions; Biology rewards the student who has seen the most question phrasings, not just read the most pages.
Chemistry — the balanced, dependable scorer
Chemistry is three subjects wearing one name. Physical is numerical — practise like you would Physics. Organic is logic — learn mechanisms and reaction reasoning, never blind memorisation. Inorganic is NCERT territory — read it thoroughly and it becomes free marks. A balanced Chemistry score of 160+ is very achievable and quietly decisive.
Physics — the subject that separates 620 from 680
Here is the honest truth: nearly everyone scores well in Biology, so Biology rarely decides your rank. Physics does. It is where most aspirants leak marks — and therefore where the biggest opportunity hides. You do not need to love Physics. You need to understand the concept, draw the situation, and practise numericals until the common patterns become automatic. Mechanics and Electrodynamics carry the most weight; build them deep. Biology gets you into the race. Physics decides where you finish. Respect both, but train hardest where you are weakest.
The PYQ + mock engine
Two engines drive a NEET score upward, and neither is "reading more." First, previous-year questions — the single best predictor of what NEET will ask you. Solve at least the last 10–15 years, topic by topic, until you can recognise a question's intent instantly. Second, full-length mock tests in the last few months, taken in real exam conditions — same duration, same OMR discipline, no pauses.
But taking the mock is only half the work. The other half is analysis, and it matters more.
- After each mock, sort every wrong answer into "didn't know" versus "knew but lost."
- The "knew but lost" pile — misreads, silly slips, time panic — is free marks. Hunt it down.
- Feed every genuine gap into your revision list, and re-test that topic within a week.
- Track your timing. In Biology you should be fast and accurate, buying time for Physics.
Revision cycles that actually stick
Your brain forgets on a schedule, so revise on a schedule too. Touch each topic again after a day, after a week, and after a month. For a subject as fact-dense as NEET Biology, spaced revision is not optional — it is the difference between recognising an answer and staring at it. Keep a tight one-page summary for every chapter; in the final weeks, those summaries — not the fat books — are what you revise from.
Boards and NEET, together
If you are in Class 12, do not treat boards and NEET as enemies. Your NCERT-heavy NEET preparation already covers most of what boards test. Align them: study the same chapters in parallel, and let strong fundamentals serve both exams. Droppers have the opposite challenge — a full year and the discipline to fill it. If that is you, structure the year in phases, protect your mental health, and lean on a mentor to keep the long months from drifting.
Neglecting NCERT in favour of thick coaching modules. Fearing Physics into avoidance instead of practice. Taking mocks without analysing them. And studying in isolation, where nobody catches the small misunderstandings that snowball into lost marks.

NEET does not ask you to be a genius. It asks you to be thorough, calm, and relentless with revision.
