Ask a hundred JEE and NEET aspirants which subject scares them, and Physics wins by a landslide. But here is what I have learned from years of teaching it: students don't fear Physics because it is hard. They fear it because it was taught to them as a pile of formulas — and formulas, without the idea behind them, are terrifying. Change how you learn it, and Physics becomes the most logical, most beatable subject you have.
Why Physics feels so hard
Most students are handed a formula sheet and told to "apply the right one." So when a question doesn't match a memorised formula, panic sets in — because there was never any real understanding underneath. Physics punishes this approach ruthlessly. It is not a memory subject. It is a thinking subject, and it rewards the student who understands what is actually happening in the problem.
The good news: thinking is trainable. Let me show you the exact shift.
The concept-first method
Before you touch a single numerical in a chapter, you must be able to answer three questions in plain words: What is happening physically? Why does it happen? What changes if I change one thing? If you can explain a concept to a younger student using no formula at all, you understand it. If you can't, no amount of formula-drilling will save you in the exam.
So learn every chapter in this order: understand the phenomenon → derive the key relationships yourself → then solve problems. Deriving formulas yourself, even once, is worth more than reading them fifty times. You stop memorising and start owning them.
You have understood a physics concept only when you can explain it out loud — cause, effect, and consequence — without writing a formula. Until then, you have memorised it, not learned it. This single test will tell you the truth about every chapter.
Learn the language of Physics
Physics has a grammar, and most mistakes are grammar mistakes. Master these four and half your errors disappear:
- Units and dimensions. They are not a boring first chapter — they are a built-in error-checker. If your units don't match, your answer is wrong, and you can catch it before you lose the mark.
- Free-body diagrams. In Mechanics, the student who draws the forces correctly has already solved 80% of the problem. Never skip the diagram to "save time" — it is the time-saver.
- Graphs. Physics loves to hide the answer in a slope or an area under a curve. Learn to read graphs as fluently as equations.
- Vectors. Direction is not a detail. Half of Mechanics is just careful bookkeeping of vectors.
Where to spend your energy: chapter priorities
Not all chapters are equal. Build them in the right order and everything downstream gets easier:

If Mechanics is shaky, fix it before anything else. A weak Mechanics foundation quietly sabotages Electrodynamics, Rotational motion, and half the problems you will ever meet.
In Physics, the student who understands one concept deeply will out-score the student who has memorised ten. Depth beats breadth, every single time.
The bridge: from concept to numerical
Understanding a concept and scoring marks are two different skills, and the bridge between them is deliberate problem-solving. Once your concept is clear, solve problems in rising difficulty — start with a straightforward application, then move to problems that combine two ideas, then to previous-year questions that hide the concept inside a story. Every time you solve one, pause and ask: which principle did this really test? That habit trains the pattern-recognition that makes hard problems feel familiar in the exam.
How to practise (so it actually counts)
- Solve with pen on paper, never "in your head" — Physics is learned through the hand.
- Prioritise previous-year questions; they teach you how examiners think.
- Keep an error notebook: every wrong problem, the concept it tested, and the fix in one line.
- Practise some problems against the clock — speed is a skill you build, not one you're born with.
- When stuck, struggle for a fixed few minutes, then get it cleared — don't let one doubt block ten new ideas.
Memorising formulas without the concept beneath them. Skipping free-body diagrams. Reading solved examples and mistaking recognition for ability. And practising only easy problems, then freezing when the exam combines two ideas. Avoid these four and Physics stops being scary.
Revising Physics
You cannot revise Physics by re-reading it — you revise it by re-solving. In your final weeks, work from your error notebook and a compact sheet of key derivations and concepts, re-solving representative problems rather than passively reviewing theory. If you can still derive the relationship and solve the standard problem, the chapter is safe. If you can't, you have found exactly where to spend your next hour.
