The 45-point system, and where 7s are really won
The IB Diploma is scored out of 45. Six subjects are each graded 1 to 7, giving up to 42 points, and Theory of Knowledge (TOK) plus the Extended Essay (EE) add up to 3 core points. Higher Level and Standard Level grades carry the same points — HL simply covers more ground.
A 7 is defined by the mark scheme, not by how much you know. Every top grade has published criteria attached. The fastest way to a 7 is to learn those criteria and write directly to them.
Master the Internal Assessments — this is where grades move
IAs are the most controllable marks in the entire Diploma: you have time, feedback, and multiple drafts. This is where disciplined students quietly turn a 5 into a 7. Start early, choose a tightly focused research question, and treat every round of teacher feedback as a scoring opportunity, not an inconvenience.

Protect your core points — the EE and TOK
The Extended Essay is a 4,000-word independent research paper; TOK examines how we know what we know. Together they are worth up to 3 points — and, critically, an E in either means the Diploma is not awarded, whatever your subject grades. Plan the EE over months, keep a genuine reflection trail, and aim for a B or better in both.

Train exam technique, not just content
By DP Year 2 your revision should be mostly past papers under timed conditions, self-marked against the official schemes. Read the command terms precisely — 'evaluate', 'analyse' and 'explain' each demand a different answer — and keep an error log so the same slip never costs you twice.
- Work through 3–4 years of past papers per subject, with mark schemes.
- Self-mark before checking the model answer — find where you would lose the mark.
- Keep an error log of misread command terms and repeated mistakes.
- Convert notes into active-recall questions; space your reviews over weeks.
