How AP scoring really works
AP exams are scored 1 to 5, where 5 means 'extremely well qualified'. They are administered each May, and many are now taken digitally in the College Board's Bluebook app, while math and science subjects use a hybrid format — digital multiple-choice with handwritten free-response. Every exam blends multiple-choice (MCQ) and free-response (FRQ), and both halves count.
A 5 rarely requires a perfect paper. Because raw scores are scaled, you can miss a meaningful number of points and still land in the top band — so play for consistency, not perfection.
Master both question types — separately
MCQs reward broad, accurate content and speed; FRQs reward showing your reasoning exactly the way the rubric expects. Top scorers practise each on its own terms, and they write FRQs to the rubric — because those marks are earned point by point, for specific, labelled steps.
